Weight: 7.49kg/16.5lb Considering the amount of additional equipment I have on this bike (dropper post, extra brake levers, remote shifters, XTR pedals and two bottle cages), the 9.5kg all-up weight is pretty decent. The new bike is much like the original, it just gets more tyre clearance and can be used with both 650b and 700c wheels. The hood shape, lever shape and lever actuation are all unique to the Di2 model, with other models having a much more traditional lever design. Our only gripe was with the grippy material covering the saddle, which made it awkward to change position. ‘The alloy Grade is a well-rounded road bike to commute on and rip up the beaten path with,’ say Patrick Kaye, GT’s senior product manager. Go for the most basic Shimano 105 spec and Shimano alloy wheels and the Nove Race will set you back £2,872, if you’re prepared to build it yourself. The brand also offers a gravel/cyclocross bike and a time trial/triathlon machine. The Nove Race feels lively and responsive to ride, with a nicely balanced frame that’s fast on the flat. That builds up into a complete bike that we’ve weighed at just under 7.5kg, including a couple of bottle cages. It’s unobtrusive, out of the wind and gives an effective hold to the seatpost. Handling is precise and confidence inspiring through corners and twisty downhills and with its low weight the bike accelerates fast. High-quality 25mm Continental Ultra Sport II tyres finish the package in style: far more voluminous than the 23mm tyres that were the norm until fairly recently – they roll quickly and give extra comfort and grip, both for braking and cornering. And while we unpack new bikes every month and try to remind ourselves of this indisputable sentiment on a regular basis, when we picked the GTS Sport out of the box we were bowled over. Already have an account with us? When we first hopped on the GTS Sport, it felt exactly the same as the best £1k to £3k bikes – the position of the saddle, handlebars and pedals was just how we liked it. At the start of the year, every member of the BikeRadar team selects a long-term test bike to ride over the course of the following 12 months.

So you can choose from any Shimano groupset between 105 and Dura-Ace Di2, with the exception of Dura-Ace mechanical. The GTS’s geometry suited our 5ft 10in (178cm) tester perfectly, placing the rider in a familiar, confident and fast position. Would its ride live up to the initial promise? The geometry is towards the traditional end of the spectrum, with steep angles and a relatively short head tube. Finally, the configurator lets you choose between having the bike shipped unassembled free of charge or for an extra £118, Nove will ship the bike to a fitter. Nove Bikes is an Australian brand that has ex-pro and ‘Worst Retirement Ever’ Strava star Phil Gaimon as a brand ambassador and is now expanding into the rest of the world. The bike is designed for adventure and to be raced at a gran fondo, but its large volume tyres and disc brakes mean it can still get off the beaten track to ride dirt roads and gravel. But Nove also lets you customise your spec to suit. Bar: Pro Vibe alloy 120mm The Claris brake levers and Tektro brakes work well together and despite being the same as those used elsewhere, outperformed some of the other bikes. I’ve always been a fan of the GT Grade, the original launched back in 2014 (as a 2015 model year bike) and was a groundbreaking machine, we even awarded it best debut in our 2015 Bike of the Year awards. Although you can get around this to some extent by speccing a shorter stem (there are options down to 80mm), it’s still a bike that promotes a more flat-backed riding position. Finally, I chose Shimano’s intriguing sub-brake levers (BLRX812SET), which run inline from the Di2 shifters and offer braking from the tops, just like cross-top levers of old that were popular around a decade ago. Frame: High mod Toray carbon The frameset is the same as the GT Grade Carbon Expert (£1,999.99), but while that comes with Shimano 105, mine has been built up for me by Shimano using its gravel-specific GRX 810 Di2 groupset. I have to admit to being a little skeptical initially about GRX; it seemed less like a new groupset launch and more like a collection of parts from existing mountain bike and road products. The Claris brake levers and Tektro brakes, Vuelta a Espana 2020: Route, start list, TV guide, Egan Bernal faces months on sidelines with spine issue, Valence X6 butted aluminium, carbon fork, alloy steerer. Other options, such as the satellite shifters mounted on the top of the bars, mimic one of my favourite set-ups from SRAM’s Red eTap group. On smooth roads, it zips along with plenty of pace and demonstrates good authority on the descents, with surefooted handling through the corners. Distributor: It’s made of high modulus Toray carbon fibre and comes with an all-carbon fork with a crown that mates with an extension of the front of the down tube, leading to a nice, seamless look. Some choose a bike from their favoured discipline and ride it hard for a year, others opt for a bike that takes them outside of their comfort zone. There’s a quality Pro Vibe bar and stem on the test bike, Pro being Shimano’s component brand. The whole range has been designed by cycling enthusiasts to ensure that at any price point you will be gettinga high quality bike …

There are four outlets shown in the UK: one in London, a couple in the Midlands and one in Scotland. We also use them as test beds for the latest kit, chopping and changing parts to see what really makes the difference – and help you decide which upgrades are worth spending your money on. Looking to insure your new bike? There are 16 steps to the design and spec process, so there’s a huge number of options you can play with. That doesn’t look like astounding value compared to the mainstream competition, where a comparable spec should come in around £2,000. There’s the option to choose a Nove carbon integrated bar/stem combo for an extra £131. Likewise, the 25mm Clement Strada LGG tyres need to be run with tubes. GT has specced the GTS Sport with a fairly tight ratio 12-25 eight-speed cassette combined with a 50/34 chainset. We’re all for that: a £500 bike is likely to be someone’s first foray into drop-bar cycling, so why patronise them with geometry that will hinder them when they want to progress? This choice did however mean that due to the real estate on my PRO Discover bar setup I couldn’t fit a standard Garmin out-front mount, so I was looking at something like the F3 Form mount, which attaches via the stem bolts. This was definitely our favourite eight-speed set-up on test, providing small gaps between gears. I was always going to go GRX on the Grade because the bike has already been built up by Shimano as part of its GRX launch, which I attended. On road climbs the high weight does make itself known, but the compact chainset and 11-28t cassette do give you a fighting chance. That starts with the frame colour: you can select from 54 different colours for the frame and apply different ones to different parts. Groupset: Shimano Ultegra hydraulic disc The technique has been used extensively by GT on its GTS Sport frame and the result is the i… You order your Nove bike on line via the brand’s 3D configurator. Mavic Aksium carb… And I’ll certainly be looking at some sort of rear ‘guard for when I’m riding in the filth. The down tube is wide and flat bottomed, so it’s unlikely to give you any aero benefits, but the seat tube has a curved leading edge and a flat rear, so it should help the bike cut through the air better than a round profile. Based in Perth, its unique selling point is a fully customisable colour scheme and spec. You can also share your colour scheme, if you want the critics’ view of your handiwork. Hydroforming is a technique where hot oil is forced through the tubes, changing their external shape. The result was that we covered the 33km three minutes faster than on the Valence. I like to have the blips mounted on the tops for shifting when up out of the saddle grinding out on a climb. I’ve tested a £10,000 Colnago C64, for example, with lower gearing from a compact chainset – although that did feel faintly ridiculous on a bike of its spec. The hood is one of the most comfortable I’ve used on any group, but then I’ve never really had an issue with many and having big hands I even found the old lumpy BR-405 lever reasonably good to hold. Having said that, the test Nove Race has come in a run-of-the-mill gloss black. Our long-term test gives us the opportunity to truly get to grips with these machines, so we can tell you how they perform through different seasons and on ever-changing terrain.
I’m more than comfortable staying up on the hoods and single-finger braking on the trails, and even on some fast, rocky and truly twisty mountain bike trails on a recent trip to Montana, riding the awesome Whitefish Bike Retreat trails. ‘You can’t judge a book by looking at the cover,’ sang Bo Diddley back in 1962, a sweeping statement (if ever there was one) but one that remains every bit as true today as it was back then. With Nove charging £22 for the pair they’re reasonably priced, although they are the only option offered. Nove says that the Race is its lightweight endurance machine. On building it up and running through the options list, a few choices needed to be made. You've been subscribed to our newsletter. It’s a technique that frame designers use to create tubes that are oversized and stiff at one end – for instance, at the load-bearing junction with the bottom bracket – but retain a level of compliance elsewhere to boost rider comfort. Nove lets you choose from an extensive range of wheels. The Nove Race is a nice handling bike and you’ve got the option to customise colours to suit your tastes and the spec to suit your needs. On any other brake lever shape I would have been down in the drops. Copyright © Dennis Publishing Limited 2020. Nove has a unique design for its seatpost clamp, which tightens from one side of the top tube to the other. You can save your design, sleep on it and come back to adjust it at a later date or start all over again. Or you can just go for naked carbon. Cyclist™ is a registered trade mark.
