It is an up and back walk, it's all uphill (and pretty steep in places) going out, but then obviously it's all downhill coming back. Headed north on a partially hard-surfaced road north from Pagosa Springs, going past the town airport and continuing on northward further along the subalpine valley, ultimately dropping down along an escarpment fairly close to the Piedra River. Watch out for poison ivy along the trail! Crossing Sand Creek could be difficult during high water. The trail winds up and down the landscape following the river. Good place to take a lunch & eat by the river. Please be respectful when visiting these hot springs.
Barely visible from the trail, you can see the steel bridge that crosses the Piedra.
